「大地の芸術祭の里」は、2000年より開催されている世界最大級の国際芸術祭「大地の芸術祭」の舞台です。里山に内在する価値をアートを媒介に掘り起こし、その魅力を世界に発信し、地域再生の道筋を築くことが目標です。「人間は自然に内包される」を基本理念にした通年での活動は、地域・世代・ジャンルを超えた共同を産み、新しい地域づくりのモデルとして世界から注目を集めています。現在は春・夏・秋・冬の季節プログラムを実施し、来訪者がいつでも「大地の芸術祭」の里を回遊できるフィールドづくりを進めています。

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, held once very three years since 2000, is one of the most geographically extensive art festivals in the world. It aims to reveal the latent values of the region through using art as a catalyst, communicate these to the world and find ways to revitalise the region. The region has become a platform for cooperation and collaboration among people of different generations and diverse backgrounds from around the world, with various activities held throughout the seasons under the overarching principle of “humans are part of nature.” These efforts have been inspiring other places across the globe as an alternative model for building community.
The museum organises seasonal programmes from spring, summer, autumn to winter in order to build a field where visitors will be able to explore the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field any time of the year they wish to.

新潟県南端の十日町市と津南町からなる、世界有数の豪雪地帯です。過疎高齢化が進む一方、国宝「火炎型土器」が遺された縄文の時代から人々が暮らし、農業を通じ大地と関わってきた「里山」の歴史・文化と、四季の変化に彩られ、山河によって育まれた日本の原風景が今も息づいています。

The Echigo-Tsumari region, encompassing Tokamachi city and Tsunan town in Niigata Prefecture, is known for heavy snowfall in winter. While the population has been ageing rapidly, it is a place that humans have inhabited continuously since the time when the kaen-doki (flame-rimmed earthenware of the Jomon period) was used. Visitors will enjoy the primal satoyama landscape rich in local history and culture where humans co-exist with nature through agriculture.

大地の芸術祭の代名詞ともいえる、空家・廃校プロジェクト。越後妻有に残る膨大な空家を作品として再生し、地域の記憶や知恵を継承しようと、100件ものプロジェクトが行われてきました。かつては地域を結ぶ場であった廃校にも、たくさんの作品が展示され、学校は再び集落のキーステーションとなりました。これらはアートという枠を超え、コミュニティの一部となって活用され続けています。

The abandoned house and closed school projects represent what the ETAT is about. Approximately 100 projects have been executed to revitalise the huge amount of abandoned houses and pass on memories and wisdoms of the community for future generations. The closed schools which once functioned as places for bringing people in the community together now present many artworks and stand as key places in the community again. These projects have become integrated part of the community and utilised beyond the conventional framework of artworks.
